Monochrome palettes use one hue across the full luminance ladder. The constraint is the strategy — once the palette is committed to a single hue, every decision below it (composition, type, photography) carries more weight.

What makes a palette monochrome.

Three rules separate this mood from its neighbours — everything else is application.

  • One hue, locked

    Hue varies by less than 10 degrees across the palette. The eye reads value contrast as variation; hue drift breaks the system.

  • Five evenly stepped tones

    From near-paper to near-ink. Uneven steps make the palette read as accidental rather than designed.

  • Saturation budget

    Either stay near zero (true grayscale) or commit to one saturated tone. The half-measure — slightly tinted neutrals — is the dangerous middle.

When to use monochrome — when to avoid.

Mood-fit is half of a brief. A palette in the wrong category fails even when its hex codes are technically correct.

Use when

  • Identity systems where typography or photography carries the load.
  • Editorial design committed to a long-form visual through-line.
  • Product chrome that wants the content to be the colour.

Avoid when

  • Hierarchical UI with many states — monochrome palettes need colour to differentiate.
  • Children's, festival, hospitality — monochrome reads as cold there.
  • E-commerce — monochrome obscures product photography unless the product is the palette.
